150,000 Condoms Handed Out To Olympic Athletes

150,000 free condoms were given to athletes participating at the London Olympics and its 50% more than the  100,000 handed out at the Beijing Games in 2008.

That means 15 condoms for each of the 10,500 competitors in the Olympic Village – with the condom's supplier Durex set to deliver tens of thousands more if insatiable stars exhaust their ration...Hmmmm this is serious.

Gunmen In Police Uniform Snatch Editor’s Car

Armed robbers dressed in police uniform at about 10 p.m.on Sunday at gunpoint snatched a car from the Editor, Nigerian Compass newspaper, Mr. Gabriel Akinadewo.

Fake Air Nigeria Staff Dupes Job Seekers

A 37-year old man, Ezekiel Eledu, who claimed to be a staff of Air Nigeria Plc has been arraigned before an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly duping job seekers after he promised to give them  jobs in the company.

According to the victims, Eledu defrauded more than 41 job seekers of N1.2 million and promised to employ them at Air Nigeria. Some of the victims defrauded include Sunday Marvin, Alen Tina, Samuel Adebayo, and Anozie Esther....continue.

Nigerian Faces Death Verdict In Malaysia

An Australian nurse and a Nigerian man face the possibility of death by hanging after a Malaysian court on Tuesday charged them with trafficking methamphetamines.

Emma Louise L’Aiguille, 34, was charged in a Kuala Lumpur court along with Anthony Esikalam Ndidi two weeks after police said they were arrested in possession of one kilogramme (2.2 pounds) of methamphetamine.

Mali Islamists stone unmarried couple to death

 

Islamists in northern Mali have stoned an unmarried couple to death, the first reported sharia killing since they occupied the area, ratcheting up pressure on an embattled interim government.  As politicians grappled for solutions in Bamako and west African capitals, the Al-Qaeda linked Islamists grew bolder, dragging a rural couple to the centre of the town of Aguelhok Sunday for a public stoning.

“I was there. The Islamists took the unmarried couple to the centre of Aguelhok. The couple was placed in two holes and the Islamists stoned them to death,” said a local government official on condition of anonymity.
“The woman fainted after the first few blows,” he said, adding that the man had shouted out once and then fallen silent.

Trafficking: JTF Intercepts 20 Vehicles With 103 Children

Members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) stationed in Lokoja, Kogi, on Sunday intercepted 20 vehicles conveying more than 103 children, suspected to have been trafficked. The JTF Commander, Lt-Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, made this known to newsmen in Lokoja on Sunday.

He said that his men became curious when they discovered that the occupants of the vehicles were mostly children, accompanied by some men and women.

The Quick Response Group Team of the Nigerian Army on sunday arrested a human trafficking suspect, Sunday Agbo from Benue State, who revealed to journalists that child trafficking is now a booming business in Makurdi.

Suspected militants have attacked the family home of Vice President Namadi Sambo on Baba Ahmed Road in Tudun Wada area of Zaria, Kaduna state. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen drove by the house and shot at two policemen guarding the house.

The policemen reportedly survived the attack. The gunmen fled the scene after the attack.

Church refuses to marry black couple in Mississippi

Those are words an African-American couple used to describe how they felt when they were forced to change the venue of their wedding because of their race. "Because of the fact that we were black, some of the members of the congregation had got upset and decided that no black couple would ever be married at that church," Charles Wilson told CNN on Sunday night.

"All we wanted to do in the eyes of God was to be man and wife in a church that we thought we felt loved. What was wrong with that? Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson had planned to marry this month at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi, but were asked at the last minute to move. Silverbird's TV presenter Yvonne  Ekwere, popularly known as Vixen, had her grey Toyota Camry v6 salon car 2000model with plate number EX 123 BC Lagos, stolen at the parking lot of Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

Vixen arrived at the hotel a little after 6:30 on Saturday July 28th to attend the YNaija #Hashtag party; by the time she came back a little after 11pm, her car had disappeared from the parking lot.

13 People Die in Benin-Ore Road Accident

 

 

About 13 passengers died in a motor accident on the Benin-Ore road yesterday morning around 7.45am.

 

The accident involved two vehicles, a mass transit Toyota Hiace bus and an Iveco truck which was  descending a slope before they had a head-on-collision. 

13 passengers died on the spot and their bodies have been deposited at Shiloh hospital, ugbogui in Edo State, while the surviving ones are said to be receiving treatments.....May the souls of the dear RIP Amen.

BREAKING NEWS: Boko Haram Suicide Bombers Hit Two Police Formations In Sokoto

Suicide bombers of the Islamist militant sect Boko Haram this morning attacked two police stations in Sokoto metropolis.

At first a suicide bomber driving a bomb rigged car attacked the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the city at Marina killing a police officer and injuring several others.

Another bomber also bombed Unguwar Rogo Police station in the metropolis.  The number of casualties in the second attack is unknown as at the time of publishing this report.

Shevchenko quits football for politics

 

Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko today said he was joining a pro-business political party after announcing that he was quitting football for politics.

The talismanic striker, who turned out for his final appearance for Ukraine when it hosted Euro 2012 last month, told his fans he was quitting all football after watching a match of Dynamo Kiev.

“Probably, I will shock all of you. My future will not be linked to football in any way… It will be linked to politics. I hope for your support,” he said in a statement on the Dynamo Kiev website.

China wins London Olympic Games’ first gold

 

 China’s world number one Yi Siling won the first gold of the London Olympics in the women’s 10m air rifle competition at London’s Royal Artillery Barracks today.

In a tense contest watched by International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, Poland’s Sylwia Bogacka took silver after a fierce battle for the top spot while Yu Dan of China clinched bronze. Yi, 23, who won the title at the 2010 world championships in Munich, had a total winning score of 502.9, 0.7 points ahead of Bogacka, on 502.2. Yu finished with 501.5. Defending Olympic champion Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic finished fourth.

Still basking in the euphoria of having an Abuja street named after her, as well as her appointment as permanent secretary in Bayelsa State, Dame Jonathan added another feather to her headgear in Abuja on Friday. This time, it was from her fellow first ladies, who re-elected her as the President of the African First Ladies’ Peace Mission (AFLPM).

Mrs Jonathan’s election which took place at the 7th Summit of the AFLPM, was unanimous. Not only was she re-elected as the president of the AFLPM, she is also expected to oversee the affairs of the Mission in Africa.

I Still Call My Husband's Phone Number - Bridget Widow Of Dana Crash Victim

Bridget, widow of Lt. Col. Owoicho Ochigbo, says she still calls her late husband on the telephone hoping to hear his voice two months after his death in the June 3 Dana plane crash in Lagos.

She said this in an interview with our correspondent after the Service of Songs of Ochigbo at the Ribadu Cantoment, Kaduna on Wednesday.

According to Bridget, she heard the news of the crash on the television.

20 Houses Burnt Over Youths Death In Rivers State.

NO fewer than 20 houses, were, yesterday, set ablaze in Omudioga community, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, when irate youths reportedly went berserk over the death of a youth, who was simply identified as Benjamin.

Details at press time were hazy but community sources said the rampaging youths speculated that the death of the late Benjamin might have been caused by some members of the community.

Falling Container Kills Woman Early Hours of Today

A female pedestrian was crushed to death this morning at Berger area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway by a container after it fell from a moving trailer. The trailer was heading out of Lagos around 7a.m when it lost one of its tyres, making the driver to lose control of the truck momentarily.

Witnesses said that as he struggled to regain control of the truck, it tipped over to its right side.

As the truck fell, it landed on the woman, who was walking beside the road, in search of a commercial bus to her destination. The unidentified woman died instantly while a gridlock formed on the outbound Lagos side of the busy expressway. Traffic officials moved to the scene and were able to lift the truck and its container with a crane back on the trailer’s tires...I made a post earlier today about the couple a container crushed  when it feel on their Audi. Mystery fire kills woman in Festac Town

 The commander, Festac Fire Station, Mr. Chinyere Azubuike, has confirmed the death of a 67-year-old woman on 511 Road, Festac Town, Lagos. The fire which started in the early hours of yesterday burnt a wing of the twin-duplex where she resides with her husband and son.

CSP Muhammed Muazu, the Divisional Police officer in Festac, also confirmed the death. He added that her remains has been handed over to the police authorities. Witnesses say the fire started around 1am, it remains a mystery because there was no power supply when the fire started and the duplex kitchen was largely unaffected.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the woman’s husband was said to have been injured in the fire but he is currently receiving treatment in an hospital. A neighbour, Mrs Ayinke Badru, said the 20-year-old son of the late woman escaped from the house and alerted neighbours who then called the fire services. The entire duplex, with wooden partitioning and flooring, was reduced to ashes but the second duplex was only slightly affected....May her soul RIP.

Two die as a container truck overturns on their Audi on the M62

 

A man and a woman have died after their car was crushed by a lorry in a motorway smash. The horrific accident forced the full closure of the westbound carriageway at junction 26 in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire where the Mercedes truck collided with the white Audi A5.

The occupants of the Audi, a 46-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, both believed to be from Bishop Auckland, Durham, died at the scene after the truck overturned onto the back half of their car.....What a sad way to die.
